Organometallic aspects of alkyl-alkyl cross-coupling catalysis
The emerging new examples of alkyl-alkyl cross-coupling reactions suggest that transition-metals can be used to effectively couple org. substrates normally thought too susceptible to competing beta-hydride elimination reactions. In the past year, the first examples of asym. cross-coupling of alkyl electrophiles have even appeared in the literature. A no. of issues still remain to be addressed, however, before we can rationally modify current catalysts to increase the scope and efficiency of the cross-couplings. A detailed understanding of the mechanism of catalysis, in particular, will help push this field ahead in sophistication, and a no. of studies in this regard will be presented.
