Illuminating Dante: An Exhibit on Dante's Divine Comedy and Its Legacy
"Illuminating Dante" celebrates both the seventh centenary of Dante's death (1265-1321) and Italian American Heritage and Culture month (October). It is presented by Special Collections and the Italian Program in the World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Department at the U of A.
The exhibit consists of 22 items from Special Collections Rare Books collection and from the collections of the Mullins Library, organized in two cases and in expository columns on the lobby floor of Mullins Library.
It features a recently acquired 1520 exemplar of the Divine Comedy, various illustrated editions of Dante's masterpiece in Italian and English, works connected to or inspired by the Divine Comedy with a focus on early modern Italian women writers, and books that explore the reception of Dante's masterpiece across cultural contexts, including the African American community.
The exhibit was curated by Assistant Professor Daniela D'Eugenio and students in her course, Italian 4123, "Dante: A Journey Between Visions and Words," and facilitated by Kara Flynn and Joshua Youngblood.
