About the Fine Arts Library

The Fine Arts Library is located in the Fine Arts Center, Room 104. The Fine Arts Center is on Garland St. diagonally across from the Arkansas Union, and just across from the Bus Entrance to the Garland Parking Deck.

Services

Course Reserves

Faculty may request materials to be placed on reserve from either the Fine Arts library or Mullins Library. Simply fill out the Course Reserve Form.

Scanners

The library has two scanners for use by the public to scan and save images from books and periodicals. Images can also be saved and taken to a personal computer or lab computer to be manipulated.

Collections

The collections in the Fine Arts Library include traditional print resources on the visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and photography), architecture, and landscape architecture. Types of materials include books, exhibition catalogs, reference books, and periodicals. Electronic resources supporting the Art, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Architecture and Design programs include Art and Architecture Source, Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, and Oxford Art Online among others.

The Fine Arts Library also maintains course reserves for faculty wishing to place materials on reserve for their classes. Visual resources such as slides and other materials are available in the Art Department slide library and the C. Murray Smart Media Center (for architecture). Archives and manuscripts related to art or architecture can be found in Special Collections in Mullins Library.

History

The Fine Arts Library opened as a branch in 1951 when the acclaimed Fine Arts Center, designed by Edward Durell Stone, was completed. The building was thought to be one of the first of its kind combining art, architecture, music, dance, speech, and drama in one building with the support spaces of a theater, concert hall, gallery, and library. Through the years, as the academic programs have grown, most programs have moved into other spaces on campus. The classroom space in the building is now fully occupied by the Art Department, while the Fine Arts Library maintains materials relating to art and architecture.

Policies

Anyone is welcome to use materials in the library, though a valid library card/ID is required to use reserve materials or to check out circulating materials. Library privileges are available for a fee to community members and researchers. An application form for privileges is available online.
