Measurement of the M/L-capture ratio in 30 million year lead-205 decay with the multiwire proportional counter.

To make a precision measurement of an M/L-capture ratio in a high-Z element a sample of Pb(180 mg.), enriched to 39% in 204Pb, was irradiated in a thermal-n flux of 1014 n/cm.2-sec. for 7 weeks. This produced ~0.05 mc. 205Pb which was purified and will be converted into gaseous Pb(Et)4 for introduction into the counter gas for direct measurement of the M/L-capture ratio. Since this ratio is very high at low decay energies and is highly energy dependent <100 kev., it is estd. that it should serve as an accurate detn. of the decay energy, if the latter is low.
