Imaging Mass Spectrometry

Mass spectrometry has been a valuable resource in science for decades. The ability to know exact masses of analytes allows for a more precise knowledge of the composition of materials. The technique has evolved to allow analysis of increasing numbers compounds in increasingly complex environments. Selected examples of biological applications of mass spectrometry imaging are discussed, in addition to a variety of tissue imaging and other medical applications. A number of inorganic applications are also described. Finally, a conclusion regarding the prospects for the future of imaging mass spectrometry completes this brief review.
