Investigation of basic membrane chemistry and components of bacteria by FTMS using fundamental preparations and simple matrix conditions
by Jones, Jeffrey J.; Stump, Mike J.; Lay Jr, Jackson O.; Wilkins, Charles L.
The method of obtaining FTMS spectra, capable of revealing bacterial membrane compositions by controlled bacterial growth and sample preparation, was discussed. FTMS made possible to detect major components of bacterial lipid membranes including phosphatidyl ethanolamines, triglycerides and glycolipids. Results show that gram negative bacteria E coli, strains JM109 and BL21DE3, show differences in both the lipid composition and chemistry of the hydrophobic tail groups. Applying simple protocols, the accurate masses of lipids were also determined.
