Nonlinear optical properties of cadmium telluride semiconductor nanocrystals were investigated for optical power self-limiting application. The semiconductor nanocrystals were synthesized through colloidal methods. The nonlinear refraction and the nonlinear figure of merit of CdTe nanocrystals in toluene (similar to8 x 10(-5) mol/L) were estimated to be similar to -1 x 10(-13) m(2)/N, and similar to200, respectively. The optical power limiting through CdTe nanoscale materials was mainly by the nonlinear refraction because of the high nonlinear FOM.
