Approach to the Synthesis of the Massileunicellins

The massileunicellins are a sub-family of highly oxidized eunicellin diterpenes which contain a densely functionalized isobenzofuran bicycle. All eight carbons of the isobenzofuran are stereogenic centers for a total of nine contiguous stereocenters. We have recently reported a cycloaldol approach to the eunicellin diterpenes. Progress toward the total synthesis of the massileunicellins via the cycloaldol will be presented.
