Optimization of conditions for optical detection of ions trapped in a Fourier transform mass spectrometery.

by Ham, Jason E.; Durham, Bill; Scott, Jill R.; Tremblay, Paul L.

The conditions for optical detection of Ions trapped in a Fourier transform mass spectometer were optimized. The 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) was shown as the leading contender for molecular ion stability in the [Ru(bpy) 3]+, [Os(bpy)3]+ and [Ir(ppy) 2(bpy)]+ complexes with [Cr(bpy)3]+ showing a unique reversal of molecular ion stablity. It was suggested that there were two flurophores with the same elemental compositions. Analysis shows that exposure to 355 nm light in the gas phase lead to photodissociation with the loss of one bypyridine ligand.
