The University of Arkansas has had a library for as long as it has had buildings. What began as one room with 137 books in a wood-frame building in 1872 has evolved into the five University Libraries on campus today. "The History of the University of Arkansas Library," an exhibit on the lobby level of Mullins Library, includes photos and artifacts from Special Collections documenting how the library has transformed over the university's 150-year history. It will be on display through January 2022.

Many students and alumni will remember the helpful assistance that Steve Chism provided at the main desk in Mullins Library, even if they never knew his name. Others may have discovered his paintings on magnolia leaves, or found art creations of wire, bark, CD-ROM discs, photocopies. and other ephemera in Wilson Park, on the Fayetteville Square, or scattered around campus. This online exhibit features some of Steve's works on permanent display in Mullins Library, as well as pieces cherished by his colleagues.

In 1933 a remarkable event occurred. The Chicago Symphony(all white and all male, like most professional orchestras of the time)premiered the Symphony in E minor by the African American woman Florence B.Price. It was the first time a black woman’s work was performed by such anorchestra. At the age of 46, she heard her music performed, to great acclaim,before an international audience at the 1933 Chicago World Fair. She hadalready composed a significant body of work that was heard in Chicago circles.

Photographer and environmental activist Ken Smith hails from Hot Springs. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. It was during his freshman year at the U of A that Smith first visited the Buffalo River with a hiking group.

World War II impacted civilian life in America every day. These changes could be surprising, subtle, profound and galvanizing, but no one was left untouched. Young men—sons, fathers, and husbands—became scarce. Familiar pantry staples had to be carefully conserved. Work opportunities forever out of reach to the "fairer sex" suddenly became accessible. Families all over anxiously waited for news, in letters, in telegrams, in newspapers, of their far flung loved ones. This exhibit explores life on Arkansas's World War II homefront with examples from the archives in Special Collections.

Internment and Heroism: Images of Japanese Americans during World War II from Special Collections

During World War II, more than 20,000 Japanese Americans were involuntarily interned in camps in Arkansas under the War Relocation Authority. Images such as those included here, as well as government documents, camp newsletters, school yearbooks, and manuscript materials held by Special Collections help preserve the personal experiences and essential history of that difficult and complex period for the nation and the state.

Beginning in 1900 and continuing over the next thirty years, Edward Sheriff Curtis, or the "Shadow Catcher" as he was later called, took over 40,000 photographic images and recorded rare ethnographic information from over eighty American Indian tribal groups, ranging from the Eskimo or Inuit people of the far north to the Hopi people of the Southwest.
